Eating the Rainbow (ETR) is an exciting school-wide nutrition program implemented by the PTA to encourage children and their families to increase their intake of colorful fruits and vegetables. The program highlights one week where each day, students bring to school fruits and vegetables for snack and lunch based on the color theme of that day. Students are immersed in nutrition education through decorations, activities, assemblies, and specialty area involvement. The goal is to motivate children to eat healthy foods by making it fun and widely appealing.
Eating the Rainbow, School Nutrition Program was created by four mothers who wanted to encourage their children to eat more fruits and vegetables. We were teaching our children healthy eating habits at home only to have our efforts go unsupported by society. As we reached out to the community, we found that we were not alone in our struggle. Soon our simple idea blossomed into an entire school-wide educational program.
It is vital that this program be established in schools for children to understand the importance of nutrition. We believe that when children are educated in nutrition and are given clear answers as to WHY they need to eat their fruits and vegetables, they will establish healthy eating habits at an early age. They will also be empowered with the knowledge to make healthier decisions on a daily basis. It is our hope that this program will assist parents at home in the everyday battle of healthy vs. unhealthy choices.
Eating the Rainbow is a dynamic program that can evolve and continue to expand. We hope that you use this program to its fullest potential. Please feel free to share your ideas to help us grow the program. CommUNITY begins right here and together we can take strides towards ensuring a healthy future for our children. It can be achieved if we work together.
